18-3 Spurt Pushes Men Past Grace

Box Score

GOSHEN — Buoyed by a pair of 20-point scorers, the Goshen College men's basketball team edged 25th-ranked Grace 88-81 Wednesday night at Gunden Gymnasium.

Conner Funkhouser and Dominique Bolden scored 20 points apiece for Goshen (16-11, 8-7 Crossroads League), combining to go 15-for-24 from the floor and 5-for-8 from three-point range. Austin Hayden added 16 points, going 6-for-8 at the foul line. All seven Goshen players who saw the floor scored at least six points.

The Maple Leafs finished 32-for-56 (57 percent) from the floor, including 17-for-24 (71 percent) in the second half. Grace (18-9, 8-7 CL) pulled down 31 boards to Goshen's 27.

Devin Heath-Granger and Christian Grider scored nine points apiece for Goshen. Heath-Granger had a team-high five assists while Trevor Commissaris led the team with seven rebounds. Commissaris scored eight points of his own.

The Lancers led 45-38 at halftime and by as many as 11 in the second stanza. The hosts used an 18-3 run to pull ahead 62-57, scoring 13 consecutive points and holding Grace scoreless for more than five minutes, to seize control in the middle of the second half. At one point, Goshen forced the visitors into turnovers on seven straight possessions; that streak was extended to eight straight empty trips when Grace missed a field goal on its next possession.

"I thought Grace completely outplayed us in the first half, but fortunately we made just enough shots to stay within striking distance," said Goshen head coach Neal Young. "The second half was a different story. Once we settled in and started rebounding, our zone took them out of their offensive rhythm and we scored so well that they didn't get any chances to run out in transition."

"Obviously Dominique and Conner were huge for us tonight, but every guy that played gave us positive contributions, especially on defense in the second half." Young continued. "During the 18-3 run, all seven rotation guys were on the floor at some point."

Goshen assisted on 17 of its 32 makes, including 10 of 17 after halftime, while holding Grace to a 1-for-11 clip from downtown in the final period. The hosts led by as many as 11 and did not trail in the final eight minutes.

The win allows Goshen to improve upon last season's overall win total and match the conference victory output with three regular-season games left. Young's 2014-15 team was 15-16 overall and 8-10 in league play.

"This group has come a long way since Christmas," Young said. "I'm very proud of the way they've stayed together and continued to get better in practice every week."

Goshen also pulls into a tie for fourth place in the conference, matching the same Grace team it just beat. Wednesday's result leveled the head-to-head series between the teams this year, but the Lancers would still come out ahead on a subsequent tiebreaker.

The Maple Leafs visit Bethel College in Mishawaka at 3 p.m. Saturday: the Maple Leafs will be looking for a season sweep of the Pilots after edging them 76-74 at home on Jan. 9.
