Box Score MISHAWAKA, Ind. — Dominique Bolden sank 12 of his 14 foul shots, making him one of three players to score a team-high 12 points as the Goshen College men's basketball team upended 11th-ranked Bethel 62-59 Saturday on the Pilots' home floor.
Austin Hayden and Christian Grider also scored a dozen points apiece for the Maple Leafs (17-11, 9-7 Crossroads League), who used seven players in the win. All seven scored between six and 12 points while playing between 20 and 33 minutes.
The Maple Leafs fell behind 8-2 before going on a 16-2 run of their own to take a six-point lead just after the midpoint of the first half. Bethel (21-7, 10-6 CL) entered the locker room up 30-26.
The Pilots held a 38-30 lead before giving up a 12-3 run: neither team led by more than two points in the final 12 minutes.
Bolden sank two free throws with 27 seconds remaining to put his team up 60-59. The Pilots turned the ball over on an ensuing possession. Following two missed Goshen foul shots, Trevor Commissaris commandeered the offensive rebound before distributing the ball to Bolden, who drained two more shots to make it a three-point margin with 10.8 seconds left. Bethel missed one 3 with three seconds left, then failed to get off another as time expired.
Neither team shot the ball well, with Bethel shooting 35.3 percent from the floor to Goshen's 32.8 percent. The Maple Leafs were 19-for-31 from the foul line.
Bethel claimed 49 rebounds to Goshen's 37. Caleb Oetjen and Travis Smith pulled down a game-high eight caroms each for BC. Oetjen and Luke Fisher scored 18 points apiece to lead all scorers.
Conner Funkhouser, Devin Heath-Granger and Kevin Phillips had seven boards apiece to lead Goshen. Funkhouser and Heath-Granger tied for a game-high four steals each: the Maple Leafs forced 19 Bethel turnovers while giving the ball up only eight times.
After knocking off the Pilots 76-74 in Gunden Gymnasium last night, Goshen finished off a season sweep of Bethel for the first time since 2011-12 and just the third time since the teams began meeting twice a year in 1980-81. 2015-16 is the first time ever that Goshen won all four regular-season games with Bethel, including both men and women.
The win, coupled with a loss by Grace, leaves Goshen alone in fourth place in the conference with a 9-7 record. The Maple Leafs trail Bethel by a single game with two games to play and, by virtue of sweeping the season series, own the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Pilots.
Goshen travels to Taylor Tuesday night in its final Crossroads League road game of the regular season. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Odle Arena in Upland.
