Box Score HUNTINGTON, Ind. — Behind 22 points from Dominique Bolden, Goshen College cruised to a 72-52 win over Huntington University in men's basketball Saturday at HU.
The Maple Leafs (15-11, 7-7 Crossroads League) were sparked by hot shooting from the floor: four of their five starters shot 60 percent or better on at least five shots apiece. Bolden and Conner Funkhouser were each 8-for-13: Funkhouser finished with 17 points. Goshen shot 55.8 from the floor while holding the Foresters (13-13, 7-7 CL) to 31.1 percent.
"Our defensive effort was great today, holding a good offensive team to 52 points on its home court," said Goshen assistant coach Jon Tropf. "Everyone that played gave a solid defensive effort. Trevor (Commissaris) was a man on a mission today, physical and relentless on the boards which translated into good offense too."
Commissaris added 12 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double.
Devin Heath-Granger scored 11 points. Heath-Granger led all players with three assists while Commissaris was one of two players with a pair of blocks.
"Dominique Bolden had a stellar second half, making shots when we went to him," Tropf said. "Conner (Funkhouser) also played incredibly well. He was aggressive and finished at a very high rate."
After falling behind 2-0, the Maple Leafs jumped out to an 18-8 lead in the first eight minutes. They led by as many as 10 points in the first half, taking a 37-29 edge into the showers at the halftime intermission, and were ahead for nearly 37 of the 40 minutes.
The Leafs forced 11 turnovers while giving the ball away just six times.
"We did a nice job limiting turnovers," Tropf said. "That's a tribute to our guards for not forcing the ball and to our big men for recognizing double teams."
Huntington came out ahead on the glass, pulling down 40 of the 71 rebounds, including the collection of 15 offensive caroms. The Foresters could only turn those second chances into eight points, however.
Bolden went 4-for-7 from three-point range: in addition to shooting well from inside the arc, Goshen also improved its season average with a 38.5 percent clip from distance.
The win pushed Goshen into a three-way tie for fifth place in the 10-team conference: the middle six teams are separated by only three games with four games apiece remaining. The Maple Leafs could still finish as high as a tie for second.
Goshen will have one more day off than usual following a Saturday game, as this week's home game against Grace will be played on Wednesday rather than Tuesday to facilitate a doubleheader with the women. Tip-off in Gunden Gymnasium is set for 8 p.m.
