Three Leafs Score In Win Over Marygrove

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Ginyce Haywood scored a goal and added an assist as the Goshen College women's soccer team cruised past Marygrove 3-1 Monday evening at GC's John Ingold Athletic Complex.

Haywood opened the scoring just past the seven-minute mark of the first half when she took a through ball from Rachel Short-Miller and slotted it home past the Mustang netminder. With the clock showing 7:53, Goshen led 1-0.

That score stood through halftime despite Goshen's 11-3 lead in shots. Marygrove (1-5) equalized at 1-1 on a penalty kick with 34:36 remaining in regulation. But the tie was short-lived, as 47 seconds later Haywood's shot rebounded off the goalkeeper to Megan Bower, who put the shot away for a 2-1 Goshen lead.

The Maple Leafs peppered the net with eight shots in the first quarter-hour of the second half, then another half-dozen over the final 15 minutes to finish the game with 29 attempts. But the final goal did not come from the run of play, instead ensuing from a Mustang foul in the penalty area with 22:20 to play. Asia Green scored on the 12-yard kick, her second goal of the season, to set the final score.

Molly Zook made two saves as she went the distance in goal for the second consecutive game, allowing no goals from open play. The Maple Leafs took seven corners and conceded five.

Haywood led Goshen with six shots and three on frame, followed by Bower with five and two respectively. Two-thirds of the 18 GC field players who appeared tried shots. For the second time this year, three Goshen players scored: the Maple Leafs have not had four different goal-scorers in the same match since 2013.

With the victory, Goshen improves to 4-4-1 in its non-conference games, an improvement from 4-5 last fall and 3-6 in 2014. The Maple Leafs begin Crossroads League play after four days off when they visit Huntington at 2 p.m. Saturday.
