Goshen Leads Late, But Can't Hold On For Taylor Upset

Box Score

UPLAND, Ind. — Xavier Newson scored 18 points while Kevin Phillips scored 15 and pulled down a team-high six rebounds for the Goshen College men's basketball team, but Jake Heggeland scored the game-winning basket with eight seconds left as 15th-ranked Taylor University won a 66-65 Crossroads League decision Saturday afternoon at Odle Arena.

Goshen (9-11, 2-6) opened the scoring with a Phillips basket after 21 seconds, only to see it countered by a pair of Evan Crowe 3-pointers that staked Taylor to a 6-2 lead barely a minute later. After an exchange of baskets on the next two trips, the visitors used an 11-0 run to pull ahead 15-8 with 13:34 left in the half.

Unfortunately for Goshen, the Trojans (15-5, 6-2) had a run of their own in them, this one a 12-2 spurt that gave TU the lead back at 22-17 eight minutes later. Six GC makes in the final five minutes left the Maple Leafs trailing 32-30 at halftime.

After the teams combined for just two free-throw attempts in the opening 20 minutes, Taylor used a 4-for-4 mark in the first two minutes after halftime to stretch its lead out to nine, 41-32. While the margin oscillated slightly for the next several possessions, it took six minutes for a Billy Geschke 3-pointer to cut the lead to four with 12:01 left, then more than an additional six minutes until GC came within one point, a Phillips basket with 5:35 to play.

Crowe responded with another triple, but by the 2:48 mark three Goshen foul shots from Phillips and Newson made the score 64-63.

On the ensuing possession, an Alhassan Barrie steal gave the Maple Leafs the ball with the chance to lead, but the teams combined for five missed shots and a turnover each over the next two minutes. The Trojans' one-point lead lasted into the final half-minute, when Newson gave Goshen its first lead of the half with 25 seconds to play.

But Heggeland scored with eight seconds left, Newson missed a jumper at the buzzer, and Goshen's second top-15 upset of the conference season was not to be.

Crowe finished with a game-high 22 points, followed by Heggeland with 12 and Keaton Hendricks with 10. Crowe and Heggeland finished with seven rebounds each to lead all players. Taylor's other two starters, Tim Fleming and Mason Degenkolb, finished with eight and five assists each: Devin Heath-Granger led Goshen with four.

The Trojans' big edge came from distance: shooting on its home rims, Taylor was 12-for-27 (44.4 percent) on 3-point shots, including six by Crowe alone, compared to Goshen's 6-for-21 (28.6 percent). Newson and Phillips each made seven field goals on 16 and 10 tries, respectively, but Christian Grider was the lone Leaf with multiple triples.

Coach Neal Young's team hosts Huntington on Tuesday in the game that brings each team's conference season to its midpoint. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Gunden Gymnasium.
