Phillips Nears Double-Double, Goshen Snaps Skid By Felling Foresters

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Xavier Newson scored 21 points, Devin Heath-Granger and Kevin Phillips each added 18, and the Goshen College snapped a six-game losing streak by edging Huntington 85-80 Tuesday night in Crossroads League men's basketball at Gunden Gymnasium.

Goshen (10-11, 3-6) shot 57.1 percent from the floor, its third-best mark of the season and best in four weeks, while holding Huntington two percentage points below its season average. After falling behind 7-2 in the first three minutes, GC used a 20-8 run to pull ahead by as many as seven and led 39-34 at halftime.

Another Forester run put the visitors (13-8, 4-5) up 46-43 four minutes after halftime. An 11-4 Leaf spurt, capped off with six straight Phillips points and finished with a fast-break dunk, gave the hosts the lead for good at 56-50 with 11:10 left.

Huntington whittled the lead down to three twice in the final seconds, the last time after Mike Bush drained a 19-footer to close to 83-80 with 5.5 seconds left. Conner Funkhouser took the inbound pass from Newson and was fouled with 4.6 seconds left. He made both foul shots, extending the lead to two possessions by any definition, and a Huntington shot fell short at the final horn.

Each team accumulated more assists than turnovers: three days after surrendering possession just four times at Taylor, Goshen dished out 16 times against 10 giveaways and almost canceled out the latter category with nine steals. Heath-Granger and Phillips tied for the game high with three takeaways each.

Five of the eight Maple Leafs to see action shot 50 percent or better from the floor, paced by a 7-for-11 clip from Heath-Granger and a 9-of-12 performance off the hot hands of Phillips. Newson was 7-for-13 from the floor and a perfect 6-of-6 at the foul line, where Goshen finished 16-for-20 (80 percent).

Heath-Granger's game-high seven assists upped his career total to 335, the seventh-most in school history. Mike Bush dropped six dimes for Huntington, which got a game-high 25 points from Tyler Arens. Phillips' nine rebounds led all boarders and matched his season high, while Funkhouser finished with five and Newson four.

Goshen hosts Marian University at 3 p.m. Saturday, marking the final opponent that head coach Neal Young's squad will see for the first time in conference play. With the season halfway complete as of Tuesday night, the Maple Leafs sit in eighth place, two games shy of a top-four finish that would allow them to host a tournament game for the second straight year.
