Eight Score But Leafs Fall Short In Conference Trip To Spring Arbor

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. — Xavier Newson posted his team-leading 15th double-figure scoring game of the season with 15 points as Goshen College lost to Spring Arbor University 80-59 Tuesday night in Crossroads League men's college basketball.

Newson led the Maple Leafs (9-8, 3-2 CL) with 15 points. Christian Grider scored 13 and added a team-high six rebounds. Kevin Phillips tossed in 10 points to make it three Goshen players in double figures.

Spring Arbor (11-6, 3-2 CL) led 38-27 at halftime following a first half in which they went 14-of-22 (63.6 percent) from the floor. Caleb Hogans led all players with 21 points after making eight of his 10 foul shots, while Zach Medendorp added 17 on 8-of-9 shooting.

Goshen finished the game shooting 40.4 percent (23-for-57) with eight assists; Spring Arbor was 28-for-48 (58.3 percent) with 21 assists. The Cougars held a 36-22 scoring edge in the paint and a 14-5 advantage in second-chance points while finishing the game with 10 personal fouls.

Thomas Sparks of Spring Arbor led all players with nine rebounds while teammate Drew Zuidema had a game-high six assists. Dominique Cartier and Devin Heath-Granger paced GC with three assists each.

The Cougars opened the scoring 26 seconds into the game with a 3-point basket from freshman Paul Marandet, the conference's reigning player of the week. Marandet scored just three points Tuesday night in 11 minutes.

In the second half, a 9-2 Maple Leaf run with baskets from four players pulled Goshen back within nine points at the 12:09 mark; Spring Arbor countered with an 8-0 run to take its largest lead to that point at 59-42.

Each team used 12 players: eight Maple Leafs and nine Cougars scored.

Coach Neal Young's team concludes its longest road trip of the season with its shortest road trip of the season, making the 26-mile jaunt to Grace College in Winona Lake on Saturday for its third road contest in eight days. Tip-off at the Manahan Orthopedic Capital Center is set for 3 p.m. following the women's game at 1.
