Grider Gets Hot For Career-High 29 In 127th Meeting With Grace

Box Score

WINONA LAKE, Ind. — Christian Grider scored a career-high 29 points on 11-of-13 shooting for Goshen College in an 87-79 loss to Grace College in Crossroads League men's basketball Saturday afternoon at the Manahan Orthopedic Capital Center.

The junior from Indian Lake, Ohio, scored 18 points in the first 17 minutes, making seven of his eight field-goal tries including a perfect 4-for-4 mark from 3-point range.

Goshen started hot, using a 15-4 run to go ahead by as many as 16 points just after the midpoint of the first half at 31-15.

Unfortunately for the Maple Leafs, Grace's Erik Bowen also had the hot hand, as the forward scored 11 points in the last eight minutes of the stanza to close Goshen's lead to 46-38 at the intermission.

The visitors ended the half shooting 51.7 percent (15-of-29) from the floor while Grace shot 48.4 percent (16-of-33). Goshen also went 7-for-11 beyond the arc, easily besting Grace's 1-for-6, and 9-for-11 at the foul line.

Bowen and Stephen Halstead combined for 14 consecutive Lancer points over a four-minute span in the second half, culminating with the Lancers (9-9, 1-5) taking their first lead since the opening minute at 58-57 with 10:56 left.

But a pair of Grider foul shots gave Goshen (9-9, 2-4) the lead back 13 seconds later, and the teams would trade buckets for some seven minutes before a Halstead 3-pointer gave Grace its largest lead to that point, 77-72, with 2:32 left.

After a pair of foul shots and a missed 3-pointer on each side, Kevin Phillips sank two free throws to close Goshen within 79-76 at the 1:03 mark, only to see Linville cancel that score out with a basket on the other end.

Dominique Cartier scored two of his 16 points with 38 seconds left, leaving the deficit at 81-78, but the Lancers went 6-for-6 at the foul line to salt away the conference win.

Cartier finished with 16 points and Phillips 15 for the Maple Leafs, who got a team-high nine rebounds from Phillips and four assists in 32 minutes from Devin Heath-Granger.

Bowen scored 23 points while Halstead and Logan Godfrey each scored 16 for the Lancers. Godfrey was 7-for-12 from the floor and led all players with 12 rebounds and two blocks. Grace racked up 20 assists on 31 field goals, paced by six from Linville.

Goshen finished 26-for-57 (45.6 percent) from the floor and 18-for-22 (81.8 percent) at the free-throw line but made two 3s on six tries after halftime. The Lancers shot 52.5 percent (31-for-59) for the game and were 6-for-12 (50 percent) from long range after halftime.

The Maple Leafs' loss snapped a two-game winning streak against their closest conference rival: Goshen and Grace have met twice every year since 1956-57, and the 127 meetings with the Lancers are the most in Goshen history.

After playing three straight games on the road, the Maple Leafs return home for three of their next four games. Goshen hosts Mount Vernon Nazarene, a team receiving votes in the NAIA top 25, at 7 p.m. Tuesday; pregame coverage on 91.1 The Globe begins at 6:45.
