UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. — A premature run at an undefeated season came to an abrupt end Saturday as the Goshen College men's basketball team fell to Calumet College of Saint Joseph 94-77 in the Jaguars Tip-Off Classic at Governors State University's Athletic and Recreation Center.
Billy Geschke continued his hot hand, following a career-high 33-point performance Friday evening to once again pace the Leafs (2-1) with 20 points. Christian Grider and Devin Heath-Granger finished just behind Geschke atop the scoring with 18 and 15 respectively.
Heath-Granger also did what he does best as the primary ball-handler for the veteran-laden Leafs by dropping a game-high nine assists. That performance pushed the Indianapolis native past the 400-assist mark in his career as he sits in fourth in GC's 61-season history.
The margin stayed within one possession for much of the first half before Calumet used an 8-0 run in the last 69 seconds to end the first half up 49-38. The run continued out of the gate as well, extending to 14-2 two possessions after halftime; Goshen never got closer than nine points in the second half.
Heath-Granger also did his best to fill up the remainder of the stat sheet with seven rebounds and a takeaway. His seven boards from the point guard position tied him for the team high with forward Alhassan Barrie. Heath-Granger's steal also leaves him one away from cracking the top 10 in GC record books.
Barrie added nine points to go with his caroms, nearly matching his output from Goshen's opener. He and Geschke earned spots on the all-tournament team.
Jose Ramirez led the opposing Crimson Wave (2-0), which reached the NAIA Division II national tournament last season, with a game-high 23 points. Teammates Devin Harrison and Michael Brooks added 19 apiece.
The trio combined with Joe Larry, the other crimson-clad cager, to finish a lethal 13-for-27 from behind the arc. The four were the only CCSJ players with a made three-pointer as the Crimson Wave shot 61.9 percent (13-for-31) from distance.
Despite the barrage from three from CCSJ, Goshen head coach Jon Tropf was optimistic about his team's defensive effort.
"This obviously isn't the result we wanted, but there are always positives that can be taken after games," Tropf said. "I was pleased that we got on the floor for loose balls and took a couple charges as Carter Boos continued to show he's a great defender."
The Leafs will look to return to the winning column next Friday as they compete against the University of Rio Grande in the Caleb Dimmich Memorial Classic at Indiana Wesleyan. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. followed by a matchup with Miami University-Hamilton the following day at 3.
