GOSHEN, Ind. — Eleven players reached the scoring column while all active players pulled down at least one rebound as the Goshen College men's basketball team pummeled East-West University 117-65 Saturday afternoon at Gunden Gymnasium.
Goshen (7-5) scored 53 points before halftime and 64 after the break, marking its third consecutive half of play with at least 50 points and its second straight 100-point performance within the past week. Goshen hadn't scored 100 points in back-to-back games since February 2000, and this week was the first time since January 1975 that GC scored 100 in consecutive games with at least one coming in conference.
Six players reached double-digits against the Phantoms (1-14) with Billy Geschke pacing all scorers with 20. Logan Primerano snapped his streak of 30-point performances by tallying 18 in just over 15 minutes of action.
Devin Heath-Granger fell just shy of a double-double performance with his 16 points and nine assists. The veteran point guard also added a game-high three steals to surpass Chad Stoltzfus for ninth-place in GC history with 155. Conner Funkhouser, Christian Grider and Colton Noel rounded out the double-digit winners with 13, 12 and 10 respectively. Noel, too, ended play near double-double status with a career-high nine caroms.
Junior Carter Boos finished the game with nine points before fouling out late in the second half. Boos was the only player to reach the disqualification limit despite each team's high foul totals: GC totaled 25 to East-West's 22.
The Phantoms attempted 38 freebies, converting on just 20 for a 52.6 percent clip. GC also reached the line at a high volume with 28 attempts of their own, 24 of which came in the first frame as the team finished 19-for-28 (67.9 percent) from the stripe.
Despite the snowy winter weather, the Leafs finished the afternoon shooting a red hot 53.2 percent (41-for-77) from the field. The onslaught was fueled by a season-high 16 made three-pointers. 11 of which came in the second half as the team posted a 47.1 percent (16-for-34) clip from beyond the arc.Goshen also finished the game with 22 assists, half a dozen more than the team's best mark this season.
"I'm proud of our guys for how they shared the ball today and there were definitely some bright moments on the defensive end," said Goshen coach Jon Tropf. "We need to be better at blocking out, but the effort at contesting shots was very good and I'm pleased with that.
Three East-West players carried the bulk of the scoring for the Phantoms as Markus Johnson matched Geschke's game-high with 20. Patrick Rucker and Cortland Gillespie added 12 and 11 respectively. East-West coughed the ball up on 25 different occasions and were outrebounded to the tune of 52-30.
Goshen will continue its five-game stretch against non-conference opponents as they return to Gunden on Monday to take on Wilberforce University and close out a three-game homestand. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
