Primerano Drops 30, Offense Comes Alive In Final 20 Minutes

Box Score

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Logan Primerano's game-high 30 points fueled a 54-point second half for the Goshen College men's basketball team Saturday in a 93-85 loss to third-ranked Saint Francis at the Hutzell Athletic Center.

Billy Geschke finished with 17 points and Conner Funkhouser added 13 for the Maple Leafs (5-5, 1-2 Crossroads League).

All of Geschke's points and 11 of Funkhouser's came after halftime, when Goshen knocked down 20 of its 34 shots (58.8 percent) and drained 12 of 16 three-pointers. Primerano went 4-for-6 from long range after halftime while Geschke and Funkhouser were each a perfect 3-for-3.

Saint Francis (9-2, 3-0) led 52-31 at halftime behind 15 points from Derek Hinen and its own hot half, knocking down 18 of 28 field-goal tries for a 64.3 percent clip.

Hinen would finish with 24 points; while six Cougar players reached double figures in the scoring column, no one else had more than 12 points.

Goshen took its first lead of the contest at 9-8 before USF knocked down its next six shots for a 16-0 run. The Maple Leafs bounced back to close the deficit to 27-19 with about seven minutes left in the half, only to watch their hosts score the last eight points of the stanza and take the largest lead of the game into the locker room.

The advantage reached as many as 25 two minutes after halftime before a pair of baskets by Funkhouser and Christian Grider closed the margin back to 20. Goshen got three and a half minutes' worth of defensive stops in the middle of the half, scoring 11 points while conceding only two free throws to close back within 65-53 at the 11:47 mark.

The Maple Leafs would get even closer, using a Geschke triple to pull within 11 with 5:09 to play, but USF responded with an 8-0 spurt of its own to put the game out of reach.

Goshen closed the game on an 11-1 run, holding USF without a basket in the last two minutes and sinking three triples in that span.

The Maple Leafs eked out 35 rebounds to USF's 33, getting eight apiece from Primerano and Alhassan Barrie. Hinen and Bryce Lienhoop each had six assists to pace the Cougars.

Goshen was called for 26 fouls compared to Saint Francis' 10, which gave the Cougars 32 foul shots to Goshen's six. In a game that finished with an eight-point margin, USF made 16 more free throws.

"I'm tremendously proud of our guys' fight," Goshen coach Jon Tropf said after the game. "We battled through unbelievable adversity to come back and the way we fought shows our character. At the end of the day, they got to the free-throw line way more than us and that was a huge factor in the outcome."

Goshen returns to the court on Wednesday against Bethel College with tip-off set for 8 p.m. in Gunden Gymnasium; for the fourth consecutive game, the Maple Leafs' opponent has yet to lose in conference play.

In addition to being a local rivalry and the last Crossroads League game before Christmas, Wednesday has also been designated Movember Night: Goshen's players and staff will don mustaches in support of prostate cancer research. A portion of the gate receipts will be donated to that cause. Fans who can do so are encouraged to grow their own mustaches for the game.
