Leafs Heat Up After Halftime In Exhibition Against D-II Findlay

Box Score

FINDLAY, Ohio — Devin Heath-Granger turned in a double-double Thursday night as Goshen College dropped a 113-78 decision to the University of Findlay in a men's basketball exhibition game at Croy Gymnasium.

Heath-Granger scored 12 points with 11 rebounds for the Maple Leafs while Christian Grider scored a game-high 22 points on the strength of six 3-pointers. Billy Geschke added 19 points while Heath-Granger, Alhassan Barrie and Tanner Camp led the team with five rebounds each.

The Oilers (13-2), who counted the game as a regular-season contest on their NCAA Division II schedule, put six players into double figures in the scoring column while working 14 players into the rotation. Martyce Kimbrough led UF with 19 points.

Findlay opened the scoring 12 seconds after the opening tip and proceeded to hit more than 65 percent of its first-half shots; the Oilers drained 25 baskets on 38 tries in the first 20 minutes, riding a similarly hot hand from long range (12-of-19 for 63 percent) to a 65-37 halftime lead.

GC would bounce back in the second stanza, when each team knocked down half of its shots and converted on five free throws. Seven of Heath-Granger's assists came in the last 20 minutes, when Geschke added 12 points and Grider 11: the game's status as an exhibition, however, means that the totals are not counted toward GC's record book.

"This game was about getting better, and with the exception of a stretch in the first half, I thought we accomplished that," said Goshen interim head coach Jon Tropf. "We fought and played hard. We never gave up. That's a really good team and a tough place to play."

Findlay came away with the edge on the glass (42 boards, paced by eight from Sullivan, to Goshen's 33) and in the turnover margin (19-11) despite Goshen registering nine steals. Grider, Heath-Granger and Conner Funkhouser each registered two takeaways each for GC.

Goshen returns to regular-season play with three games in an eight-day span beginning this weekend in Gunden Gymnasium. The Maple Leafs will host Grace Bible College at 3 p.m. Saturday in a non-conference game before taking on Spring Arbor and Grace in Crossroads League action later in the week.
