Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Conner Funkhouser scored 15 points to lead Goshen College in a 90-73 loss to Bethel College In Crossroads League men's basketball Wednesday night at Gunden Gymnasium.
The fourth-ranked Pilots (22-3, 12-1), who entered the night with a 1.5-game lead in the conference standings, made eight of their first nine shots to take a double-figure lead in the game's first three minutes. Bethel led 40-29 at the half and never let their lead slip below three possessions.
Dominique Cartier and Devin Heath-Granger scored 10 apiece for the Maple Leafs (10-15, 3-10), who shot 58.8 percent (20-for-34) in the second half and 48.4 percent (31-for-64) in the game as a whole. Xavier Newson scored nine points and Kevin Phillips had eight to go with a team-high seven rebounds, while Carter Boos and Tanner Camp each made a pair of baskets off the bench.
Bethel countered with 55.4 percent shooting (31-of-56) from the floor and nine 3-point makes on 17 tries. Six Pilots scored in double figures, led by Caleb Oetjen with 20, while Gage Ott posted a double-double as he combined 15 points with a game-high 10 boards.
Heath-Granger's seven assists moved his career total to 356, pulling within 14 of 2014 graduate Stefon Luckey for sixth place on Goshen's all-time list. BC's Jordyn Coon led all players with nine dimes as each team assisted on more than 60 percent of its baskets.
Both teams made 31 field goals, but the difference came at the foul line, where Bethel posted a 19-5 edge. The Pilots shot 19-for-22 (86.4 percent), including 15-for-16 by the starting five.
Funkhouser and Phillips led all players in steals and blocks with four and three, respectively. The Maple Leafs forced 14 turnovers, with 11 of those coming via steal.
The loss dropped Goshen into a tie with Marian for ninth place in the Crossroads League; each of the 10 CL teams have five games left, and the Maple Leafs and Knights will face each other Feb. 18 in Indianapolis to close the season.
Goshen visits the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne at 3 p.m. on Saturday after the two schools' women's teams meet at 1.
