RIO GRANDE, Ohio — Payten Davis scored twice in a span of less than two minutes early in the first half Saturday as the University of Rio Grande topped Goshen College 3-0 in non-conference women's soccer.
Davis took a through ball from Madi Bowers and beat Goshen netminder Kadie Spoor from 10 yards out after 5:14 had elapsed. At the 6:56 mark, she doubled that lead by beating the keeper 1-on-1 after Spoor came off her line. Chase Davis got the assist on the second Red Storm goal.
Goshen (3-4-1) saw its best chance for a comeback fall by the wayside in the middle of the first half: between the 15th and 25th minutes, the Maple Leafs took four shots, only to see Andrea Vega save two while one sailed wide and the other high.
Daniella DeSousa tallied an insurance goal assisted by Kaylynn Bell with 14:16 left in regulation to set the final score.
Rio Grande (2-5) took 18 of the match's 25 shots and had nine of the 12 attempts on frame. Spoor kept her team in the match with half a dozen saves in her collegiate debut. Goshen doubled up URG with four corner kicks but was unable to convert on any of them.
DeSousa led Rio Grande with four shots, all on target, while Davis' goals were her only two shots on goal of the night. Catherine Loera and Lena Charles took two attempts each to lead GC.
Goshen returns to action on its home field next Saturday for its Crossroads League opener, taking on Huntington University at 4 p.m. before the men host Saint Francis at 7.
