Box Score INDIANAPOLIS — Billy Geschke moved onto the doorstep of the top 10 on Goshen College's all-time scoring list Saturday as the Maple Leafs dropped a 107-86 decision to Marian University in Crossroads League men's basketball action.
The Medina, Ohio, native scored 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting to raise his career total to 1,344, four short of 1999 alumnus Mark Landes, who has held the 10th spot since 2008.
The Maple Leafs (10-12, 3-7) found themselves playing catch-up from the opening minutes on Saturday: Marian (15-7, 5-5) missed its first shot before sinking nine of the next 11 and 19 of the next 24. The Knights didn't miss consecutive shot attempts in the first 17 minutes; the first of those misses was also their first miscue from 3-point range after starting 11-for-11.
Five GC players combined for 12 points in a three-minute span to close out the half; nevertheless, entering the locker room, Marian led 61-38. The Knights shot 24-for-37 (65.8 percent) in the half while Goshen went 13-of-36 (36.1 percent) from the floor.
The final 20 minutes actually swung in Goshen's favor, as the Maple Leafs used five blocks and a 7-4 edge in 3-point goals to outscore MU 48-46 in the second half.
The Maple Leafs got a 12-3 run late in the second half and added six points from Colton Noel in the final 128 seconds; Geschke scored 10 points in each half while Devin Heath-Granger added 13 after the intermission.
Wesley Stowers racked up 25 points and Reginald Kissoonlal 22 to lead Marian; Kissoonlal also chipped in a game-high 11 boards for a double-double. Stowers led all players with nine assists; while Heath-Granger came a dime short of matching the game high, he did move within a dozen assists of Goshen's career record held by 1981 graduate Kenny Edwards.
Marian finished the game with 43 rebounds to Goshen's 40, although the Maple Leafs doubled up on the offensive glass (16 caroms to 8) and posted a 16-11 edge in second chance points. Carter Boos got all three of his rebounds on the offensive glass; Conner Funkhouser, Alhassan Barrie and Patryck Ostrowski added two offensive boards apiece.
Patryck Ostrowski added three blocks to his seven rebounds for GC, getting him 28 stuffs on the season. Heath-Granger also made a pair of moves in the GC record book: his three steals moved him past Jordan Buller for fourth on the career list at 172, while his 145 assists this season make him ninth on the single-year list after edging past Matt Littleton.
The Knights finished the game with a 58 percent clip from the floor and a 65.2 percent mark from downtown; Goshen countered with 35.5 percent and 37.9 percent respectively, but out-shot Marian 80.8 percent to 60 percent at the foul line.
Goshen returns home Tuesday night as the team plays its second home game in the 30-day stretch from Jan. 7 to Feb. 5. The Maple Leafs host NAIA Division II no. 7 Indiana Wesleyan University at 7 p.m.
