Box Score PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — Demarkus Stuckey recorded his second 30-point game of the month Friday night, but Shawnee State University topped Goshen College 79-73 in non-conference men's basketball action at SSU.
Stuckey dropped 18 points in the first half, including the last five Maple Leaf buckets, and finished with 31 to lead all players.
Shawnee State (3-0) got 14 points from Justin Johnson to lead the team, but countered that with the depth of four double-figure scorers and six players with 8 or more points. The Bears' EJ Onu led all players with 10 rebounds and 5 blocks.
Colton Noel added 11 points while Patryck Ostrowski and Brandon Watkins chipped in 8 each for the Maple Leafs (1-4). Stuckey recorded the game highs with 7 assists and 3 steals.
Goshen used a 12-3 run to take the lead on an Ostrowski 3-pointer seven minutes into the game and led throughout the rest of the first half, pulling ahead by six on four occasions. The advantage reached as far as nine points at 30-21 on a Stuckey basket with 3:12 to go and GC led 34-30 at halftime.
The Maple Leafs shot 40 percent (14-for-35) from the floor before halftime while Shawnee State struggled to get untracked, going 2-of-10 from long distance and 4-of-11 at the foul line.
While Goshen's defense held SSU to eight field goals in the second half, the hosts hit on the ones that counted, sinking 5 of 7 3-pointers (71.4 percent) while knocking down 28 foul shots over the final 20 minutes.
Chris Byrd scored Shawnee State's first 7 points of the half to put the hosts in front 2:05 after halftime. In the proverbial third quarter, Tamal Watkins added 6 points and Selby Hind-Wills added 5, giving the Bears a 55-46 lead with 10:39 to go.
Brandon Watkins scored 8 points after the break for GC, including 5 in a row as part of a 10-3 run that closed the Maple Leafs back within 58-56 at the 8:38 mark. Less than 20 seconds later, Tim Bikapia went to the foul line for two Shawnee State free throws; he would score 9 points the rest of the way as the Bear lead remained at least two possessions.
Goshen finished the second half shooting 15-of-37 (40.5 percent) from the floor and 5-of-15 (33.3 percent) from distance. Shawnee State held rebounding advantages of 17-11 in the second half and 41-29 for the game.
The Maple Leafs conclude their weekend slate Sunday afternoon with a visit to Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti.
