Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. — Demarkus Stuckey averaged almost a point a minute over a two-game span Friday and Saturday, scoring 52 points in 55 minutes as the Goshen College men's basketball team hit the road for the first time this season in the Caleb Dimmich Memorial Classic at Indiana Wesleyan University.
The Maple Leafs dropped a 95-93 decision to the University of Michigan-Dearborn in overtime on Friday and fell 82-58 to Olivet Nazarene University on Saturday.
Goshen (1-2) raced to a 51-point first half in the opener on Friday, hitting on five of the team's first seven 3-pointers and opening a 21-6 lead on the Wolverines in less than eight minutes. Stuckey had 18 points at the intermission and two Patryck Ostrowski triples were part of an 11-3 spurt that closed the half with a 51-38 Maple Leaf lead.
UMD (1-2) wasted little time in trimming the margin back to single digits before Ben Cotton and Tamaje Blackwell put the Maple Leafs back up 12 with 11:13 to play. Another Blackwell trey made it 75-64 just after the 8-minute mark. Unfortunately for the Maple Leafs, their foes also had an offensive run in them, scoring 11 of the next 13 points to tie the game on a Mafiaion Joyner 3-point play at the 6:14 mark.
Goshen drew the next blood, getting Stuckey free throws and an Alhassan Barrie basket for a four-point lead, but the Wolverines refused to go away and neither team made a field goal over the final two and a half minutes of regulation. Cody Kegley scored the last four points for Michigan-Dearborn, all of them at the foul line, to send the game to overtime.
The teams traded baskets, then sets of free throws, then more foul shots in the first half of the extra session before three straight defensive stops in both directions left the score tied at 91 with a minute to play. Zac Chichester put the Wolverines on top with 29 seconds to play before Blackwell chipped in two of his eight points to bring Goshen back to a tie at the 0:11 mark. Zach Lattimore scored the game-winner for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference foe as time expired.
Each team finished the contest shooting 43 percent from the floor as well as from 3-point range; UMD was 28-of-37 (75.7 percent) at the foul line to Goshen's 18-of-28 (64.3 percent). The Maple Leafs forced 23 turnovers against 16 giveaways and added an even 50 rebounds, including 18 cleanings of the offensive glass.
Stuckey finished with 34 points while Barrie added 19 with 10 rebounds. Eli Gingerich and Ostrowski both scored 10 and led the team in another category, posting 6 assists and 14 rebounds respectively.
Joyner finished with 26 points and 16 rebounds to lead UMD in both categories: Kegley and Lattimer each scored 19 and Chichester finished with 10 points.
Saturday, it was Olivet Nazarene's turn for the hot start as the Tigers (2-1) scored on six of their first seven possessions. Goshen shot 50 percent (13-of-26) from the floor in the first half, including a 12-0 run that spanned more than four minutes, but Nic Reed scored ONU's last 7 points as the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe took a 43-30 lead into the locker rooms.
Branagan drained a 3-pointer with 17:25 to play that got Goshen within 10 points, but the Maple Leafs would get no closer. ONU shot 16-of-33 (48.4 percent) in the second half and assisted on three-fourths of its field goals.
Eight Maple Leafs scored and 11 saw action in the Saturday game, with Stuckey's 18 points and Blackwell's 12 leading the team. The teams combined for 57 defensive rebounds against 13 on the offensive side, allowing Stuckey to lead the team with 6 boards as well. Reed paced all players with 37 points and 8 rebounds.
Host Indiana Wesleyan claimed the mythical tournament title with a 2-0 record, defeating both Olivet Nazarene and Michigan-Dearborn.
