Davenport too much for Maple Leafs in exhibition

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Austin Branagan scored 12 points to lead the Goshen College men's basketball team, whose first-half deficit proved too much to overcome in a 109-52 exhibition loss at Davenport University on Wednesday.

The Panthers (9-2) put six players in double figures, paced by Robbie Bramhill with 22 points, and got a double-double from Avery Hudson with 13 points and 18 assists. Davenport shot 64.7 percent (44-for-68) in the contest, including a 27-for-38 (71.0 percent) mark before the intermission.

Demarkus Stuckey scored 9 points, Alhassan Barrie 8 and Tamaje Blackwell 6 for the Maple Leafs, who got 37 of their 52 points in the final 20 minutes. Stuckey's 8 rebounds led all players and his 4 assists and 2 steals were both team highs. Blackwell, Tanner Camp and Ryan Mansbarger each added 3 rebounds and Dillon McCullough contributed a pair of assists.

Davenport led 68-15 at halftime after scoring the game's first 9 points. The Panthers sank eight 3-pointers before the break and assisted on 18 of their first 27 field goals.

The Maple Leafs wrested back the upper hand for a six-minute stretch of the second half, going on a 19-12 run from the 18-minute to 12-minute marks behind 7 points from Branagan and 6 from Stuckey. The entire second half was played within a four-point margin of the halftime score: Davenport finished the half with a 41-37 edge on the scoreboard. Goshen shot 15-for-34 (44.1 percent) after halftime.

All told, 13 Goshen players saw action, all of them for at least 11 minutes. Nine members of the team scored, 10 collected rebounds and all of them attempted multiple shots. The teams combined for 131 shot attempts and 149 possessions, with the ball changing hands every 16 seconds.

Goshen returns to the NAIA and regular-season action to close out its pre-Christmas slate with a visit to the University of Northwestern Ohio on Friday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. in Lima, Ohio.
