Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Alhassan Barrie scored 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting Friday night as Goshen College ran its men's basketball winning streak to three games with a 71-64 win over Central State University in Gunden Gymnasium.
Demarkus Stuckey came one rebound short of a double-double with 13 points and 9 boards for the Maple Leafs (4-11), who shot 16-for-29 (55.1 percent) in the second half. Colton Noel added 10 points.
The Marauders (1-11), who play in NCAA Division II, got a game-high 18 points and 12 rebounds from Dreon Lewis. Orion Monford added 17 points and Martin Oliver kicked in a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Six of Oliver's 10 boards came on the offensive glass.
In each team's first game after Christmas, defense prevailed at the start as the teams combined for four made baskets in the opening five minutes. Goshen used an 11-2 run with scores from four different players to take a 14-10 lead at the first half's midpoint before CSU leveled the score with an 8-2 spurt over the next 5 minutes. A Stuckey triple put the hosts up 32-31 at halftime.
The Maple Leafs came out with four quick points after halftime for a 36-31 edge, prompting a Marauder timeout; Monford and Oliver combined to score the next 10 points, prompting GC head coach Jon Tropf to call a halt to the action. Within a minute, Goshen had tied the score at 41 on baskets from Stuckey and Patryck Ostrowski.
Goshen broke the game open with a 12-2 run through the middle of the half, putting a lid on Central State's basket for more than 9 minutes between field goals. Ben Cotton sank a pair of triples for Goshen in that run as the team went 4-of-6 from long range. By the 6:10 mark, the Leafs led by 13 at 67-54 and would never trail again.
Stuckey led all players with 6 assists and was one of a trio with 2 steals; Cotton added 3 dimes off the bench. Central State finished with a 40-27 advantage on the glass, but Goshen racked up a dozen 3-pointers and held CSU to 3-of-16 (18.8 percent) from long range.
The teams finished almost even in total field-goal percentage: Central State shot 48.1 percent with 26 makes on 54 attempts, while Goshen was 27-of-57 for 47.4 percent.
Goshen faces a quick turnaround before its final test of 2018, a Sunday afternoon matchup with Holy Cross College. The Saints are the first of two straight Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foes that round out GC's non-conference schedule and they visit Gunden Gymnasium for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
