Box Score UPLAND, Ind. — Eli Gingerich sank three first-half 3-pointers and Demarkus Stuckey scored six straight Goshen College points in overtime Saturday night as the Maple Leaf men's basketball team lost a 71-68 Crossroads League decision to Taylor University.
Ryan Mansbarger added a career-high 10 points off the bench for Goshen, going 3-of-5 from the floor and 2-of-4 from long range. The freshman from Van Buren, Indiana, also made his first collegiate free throws and contributed a rebound in his 7-minute stint.
Ryan Robinson scored 17 points, including the go-ahead basket with 40 seconds left in regulation, to lead all scorers for Taylor (5-8, 2-3). The Trojans also got 15 points from Mason Degenkolb and 10 each from Jason Hubbard and Jake Heggeland.
Goshen (1-10, 0-5) matched the four double-figure scorers behind 12 points from Tamaje Blackwell. Austin Branagan added 9 rebounds in 34 minutes, leading all players; Stuckey had a pair of game highs with 4 assists and 3 steals.
Heggeland scored the game's first basket before Goshen opened leads of 11-2 after six minutes and 27-10 after 13 minutes. The Maple Leaf first half included 11-0 and 14-2 runs, holding the Trojans to 3-for-19 from the floor at one point.
A Vincent Miranda free throw tied the teams at 29 heading into halftime.
Taylor led by as many as nine points in the second half, starting on an 11-2 run before Goshen answered with a 10-2 spurt. Mansbarger tied the game twice, first connecting on the free throws with 7:52 to play before sinking a 3-pointer at the 7:25 mark to make it 51-51.
Alhassan Barrie gave Goshen its last lead of regulation with a bucket at 3:27; after Blackwell extended the lead on the next possession, Taylor scored four points in a row ending in Robinson's drive down the lane. Barrie made a free throw with 25 seconds left to tie the score; Goshen got the offensive rebound but missed a pair of shots as the game went to overtime.
In the extra session, Robinson and James McCloud scored the first four points for the hosts before Stuckey's personal 6-0 run made it 67-65 Goshen with 1:30 to play. Robinson responded with a go-ahead triple 26 seconds later and scored again in the final 15 seconds to cut the lead to three.
Taylor fouled Stuckey with 4.6 seconds to play, sending the Maple Leafs' leading scorer to the foul line for two shots rather than risking the chance for a tying 3-pointer. His first attempt was good; the second rimmed out, leaving the chance for an offensive rebound and put-back, but Goshen was called for a loose-ball foul. On the other end of the floor, McCloud made one free throw to produce the final margin.
Goshen finished with a 39-14 edge in bench points as the Trojans only used eight players, seven of whom played 27 minutes or more. The Maple Leafs had a season-high 5 blocks and pulled down 46 rebounds, their second-best mark of the year.
Up Next: Goshen is off this week for final exams before returning to action on Monday, Dec. 17 against Governors State. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in the Maple Leafs' last home game before Christmas.
