Cougars Halt Leafs In Michigan Despite Barrie's Big Night

Box Score

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. — Alhassan Barrie's career-high scoring effort wasn't enough for the Goshen College men's basketball team Tuesday night in a 95-72 loss at NAIA Division II 22nd-ranked Spring Arbor University.

Barrie scored 20 points, one tally more than the 19 he dropped in against Wilberforce nine weeks ago Monday, hitting nine of his 11 shots from the floor to go with a perfect 2-for-2 at the free throw stripe. He paced the Maple Leafs with two assists and a block, tying for the team lead in both categories, and added four rebounds as well.

The Cougars (20-9, 8-9 Crossroads League) dropped in 17 points in the first 6½ minutes, leading by as many as 18 points in the first half behind 16-of-32 (50 percent) shooting and a 4-of-9 mark from downtown.

Goshen (11-18, 4-13) made its first basket, a Christian Grider 3-pointer 48 seconds after the opening tap, and two of its last three shots of the first half. In between those scores was a different story as the Maple Leafs went 8-for-29 in the opening 20 minutes. Spring Arbor led 41-26 at the intermission.

Both teams put the biscuit in the basket with greater frequency after halftime: out of 31 shots each, Goshen made 16 (51.6 percent) and Spring Arbor 20 (64.5 percent). After the Cougars scored the first four points out of the locker room, GC dropped in eight in a row in 45 seconds to close the deficit to 45-34 with 17:26 remaining.

Unfortunately for the visitors, that was all the farther they would get. SAU scored eight of the next nine points and led by at least 15 the rest of the way. The Cougars concluded the game with nine of the last 11 points as well.

Billy Geschke and Devin Heath-Granger each added 12 points for Goshen with Conner Funkhouser adding 10 alongside his team-high five rebounds.

Zach Medendorp led all scorers with 22 points for Spring Arbor, outpacing teammate Jeff Beckman by two: the Cougars' starting frontcourt finished 19-of-25 (76 pecent) from the floor. Beckman added 11 rebounds for a double-double while Brandon Durnell contributed 11 caroms off the bench: SAU finished with 43 rebounds as a team.

Tommy Hamilton paced the guards with 19 points, sparked by a 4-of-5 mark from 3-point range, and added a game-high eight assists: SAU recorded helpers on three-fourths of their 27 baskets. The Maple Leafs outshot the Cougars from the foul line, though, recording an 18-13 edge on 20 attempts apiece.

Goshen returns home Saturday afternoon to conclude the regular season against Marian University. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. in Gunden Gymnasium; the afternoon will also include recognition of the team's four seniors. A women's game begins the doubleheader at 1 p.m.
