Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — The Goshen College women's soccer team spent 90 minutes getting stronger Monday night, but a seventh-minute strike made the difference on the scoreboard as Concordia University prevailed 1-0 at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
The Cardinals (1-0) took the match's first nine shots, putting two on target, only for the Maple Leafs (0-1) to attempt four of their own in the last quarter-hour before halftime. Janaya Lothian scored the lone goal of the match with 38:19 on the first-half clock.
Goshen also had its share of chances after the intermission, with Allyson Smith missing high off a corner kick in the 68th minute and Lauren Cernak and Taliah Borom both getting off shots at the 75-minute mark.
Katie Baer made 8 saves for Goshen, matching her 2017 season average. Cernak paced the Maple Leafs with three shots, matching the number of Maple Leaf corner kicks.
Concordia finished with a 21-9 edge in shots and a 9-3 advantage in shots on target. Lothian, Matea Smith and Samantha Golchuk took five shots each.
With its home opener in the books, Goshen embarks on a three-match road trip, beginning with a Friday night game at Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
