Underclassmen run the show as late Leaf spurts push Pilots

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Colton Noel's 17-point effort paced the Goshen College men's basketball team in a 76-66 Crossroads League loss to 14th-ranked Bethel College on Wednesday in Gunden Gymnasium.

The sophomore from Addison, Illinois, converted on 7 of his 10 field-goal tries and led the Maple Leafs with a pair of blocks despite being limited to 20 minutes by foul trouble. Alhassan Barrie added 13 points, including 9-of-10 shooting on free throws, while Tamaje Blackwell scored 12 points with a game-high 6 rebounds for the Maple Leafs (6-17, 0-11).

The Pilots (18-5, 7-4) put four of their five starters in double figures, getting 20 points from Paul Forman to lead the team. Trey'von Covington and Luke Fisher each chipped in seven field goals apiece, scoring 19 and 17 points respectively, and Trevion Crews added 10 points.

Bethel used an early 13-2 run to set the tone for a first half in which it shot 57 percent (12-for-21) from the floor, but the Maple Leafs held their guests without a field goal for the final 4:59. A 10-point Maple Leaf run was snapped by two Pilot free throws with 3.4 seconds remaining, but the halftime advantage still stood at just five points, 32-27.

The teams combined for 83 points, 28 field goals and 21 foul shots in the second half, which started with a Noel basket to bring the Maple Leafs back within 3 points after 32 seconds. Bethel answered with a free throw on the following possession and a 3-pointer on the next trip, running the lead out to 7 points, and the defense took over from there to spark a 15-3 run.

Blackwell scored six straight points, culminating with a triple at the 7:54 mark, to get Goshen's deficit back down to 11 before Eli Gingerich found Noel on a fast-break bounce pass to make it a 9-point game 80 seconds later. Goshen could get no closer, though, as Bethel matched the Leafs' next four scores.

Goshen shot 46 percent (13-for-28) from the floor in the second half and 42 percent (23-for-55) for the game, but went cold from distance to the tune of a 5-for-22 (23 percent) mark. Bethel shot 54 percent from the floor and 50 percent from long range.

Blackwell contributed 6 assists and 2 steals, both game highs: Jared DeHart led Bethel with 4 dimes, and eight of the nine Pilots who played recorded assists. Noel was the only player on either team to block multiple shots.

Up Next: The Maple Leafs play three of their next four games on the road, beginning with a Saturday sojourn to Marian University in Indianapolis. Tip-off in the Physical Education Center is slated for approximately 3 p.m. after the women's game at 1:00.
