Stuckey beats buzzer for Goshen's fifth straight win at Trinity International

Box Score

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Demarkus Stuckey scored a game-high 19 points Wednesday night as the Goshen College men's basketball team closed its non-conference schedule at Trinity International University, but none of them loomed larger than the go-ahead score with 2.7 seconds remaining in a 74-72 win.

The Maple Leafs (6-11) extended their winning streak to five games on the strength of four double-figure scorers and an Alhassan Barrie double-double. Barrie grabbed a game-high-tying 10 rebounds to go with 3 blocks and 13 points. Tamaje Blackwell and Colton Noel added 12 points each. Carter Boos matched Stuckey with 5 assists, leading all players.

Jeremy Carlyle sparked the Trojans (10-7) with 17 points, outpacing Jamal Bailey by one, and also recorded 5 assists. Nate Schmidt and Greg Carlyle each added a dozen points and Thadeous Johnson retrieved 10 rebounds.

Goshen hit its first four shots of the evening for an 11-2 lead in less than three minutes; with the exception of 75 seconds in the second half, the Maple Leafs led the rest of the way. Behind 43.3 percent shooting (13-of-30) in the first half, GC led 35-31 at halftime.

Bailey scored nine of Trinity International's first 12 points; Greg Carlyle used a personal 5-0 run to close the lead to one point with 6:52 remaining, but four different Maple Leafs scored before the end of the half. Goshen's Colton Noel led all scorers with 10 at halftime.

GC reached its maximum lead of 13 points twice after halftime, on a Noel layup with 15:50 remaining and a Patryck Ostrowski 3-pointer at the 14:58 mark.

Over the final 11 minutes, the teams traded runs. Johnson and Bailey combined for nine straight Trojan points to bring the hosts within one at 56-55. The next possession started a 10-0 Maple Leaf spurt that ended with two Barrie free throws for a 66-55 lead with 5:59 remaining, but Trinity reeled off 10 points in a row to close back within a point at the 3:45 mark.

The teams traded 3-pointers, then layups, then missed free throws before Barrie doubled GC's lead with his seventh foul shot of the night, making it 72-70 with 95 seconds remaining. Brandon Lawani tied the score at 72 on the ensuing possession, marking the first tie since the opening minute, and each team missed a chance to take the lead.

With 36 seconds on the clock, Barrie corralled a defensive rebound; the Maple Leafs called for time once they brought the ball across halfcourt. After driving inside the free-throw lane, Stuckey went to his right to hit the game-winning shot as the shot clock expired.

Trinity had one last shot for the win, but a 40-footer missed at the final horn.

"We really competed tonight," said Goshen coach Jon Tropf after the game. "This was a really good team that plays well on their home court. To go in and get this one is a testament to the fight of our guys. Defense has fueled our recent success, and I'm very pleased about that."

Each team upped the ante on its shooting in the second half, with Goshen hitting on half of its 26 attempts while Trinity International went 16-for-33 (48.5 percent). The Maple Leafs finished with a 14-5 advantage in free-throw attempts for the half. Each team finished with 6 steals and 12 points from their bench players.

Goshen returns to the Crossroads League on Saturday for the first of 13 consecutive conference games that will close out the regular season. Marian University, the 15th-ranked team in NAIA Division II, provides the opposition for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
