Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Demarkus Stuckey scored 19 points in the first half and finished with a game-high 24 on Saturday, but the Goshen College men's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end with an 89-63 loss to Marian University at Gunden Gymnasium.
The Knights got 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting from T.J. Henderson and 19 from Wes Stowers as Marian's entire starting lineup scored in double figures. The 15th-ranked Knights shot 57 percent (28-for-49) from the floor and 59 percent (10-of-17) from long range while turning the ball over four times.
Marian came out of the gate hot, sinking its first six shots on the way to a 19-9 lead, but Goshen hit on six of its first seven attempts as well to close that lead to four points by the midpoint of the first half. Stuckey and Patryck Ostrowski combined for 12 straight Maple Leaf points through the middle of the half and Stuckey scored eight of Goshen's last 10, but 13 Marian free throws gave the Knights a 48-38 lead at halftime.
The teams nearly matched shooting numbers in the first half, making 14 field goals apiece on 26 attempts for Marian and 25 for Goshen. Marian (15-3, 4-2) also went 7-for-11 from 3-point range and posted a 17-6 advantage in free throws. GC pulled down 12 of the 20 rebounds, but Marian countered that with all four of the half's steals.
Each team started 3-for-4 from the locker room after halftime before a 7-2 Maple Leaf run trimmed the lead to six points; Stuckey added three straight points on foul shots to make it 61-56 with 12:05 remaining.
Marian countered with eight straight points, capped by a Sterling Brown 3-pointer with 9:32 on the game clock, and the lead would stay in double figures the rest of the way.
Austin Branagan paced the Maple Leafs with 7 rebounds coming off the bench in his first game since December 21. Alhassan Barrie scored 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting, hitting double figures for the fifth time in six games, and Ostrowski contributed 9. Barrie also led all players with 2 blocks while Stuckey tied for the game lead with 6 assists.
Reginald Kissoonlal added 13 points, Cameron Wolter 11 and Brown 10 for Marian, which got 7 rebounds from Henderson and 6 assists from Brown. Stowers was the only player on either side with multiple steals.
Goshen finished with a 28-27 edge on the glass and shot 41.1 percent (23-for-56) from the floor along with an 11-for-15 (73.3 percent) mark at the foul line. Marian was 23-for-29 (79.3 percent) on free throws.
GC is back in action Tuesday night when it welcomes Huntington University to Gunden Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. tip-off. The game is a continuation of the Crossroads League's longest continuous rivalry, as the Maple Leafs and Foresters have met in conference play in every season since 1970-71.
