Box Score

UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. — Austin Branagan notched his first career double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds Friday night as the Goshen College men's basketball team opened its season with a 78-63 win over East-West University in the Jaguar Tip-Off Classic hosted by Governors State University.

The Maple Leafs (1-0) held the Phantoms to 33 points on 15-of-40 shooting in the second half, hitting at a 19-of-34 (55.9 percent) clip themselves in the win. Goshen drained 7 second-half 3-pointers and put five players in double figures in the win.

Tahj Curry scored 14 points while Michael Bowers added 13 and Sheddrick Porter Jr. and Colin Flowers each added 11. Porter and Branagan each played a game-high 37 minutes. Curry added 9 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 blocks to lead the team in all three categories.

Brandon Daughtry scored a game-high 20 points off the bench with the help of 4 3-pointers for the Phantoms (1-1). Jeohnni Moore added 12 points while Tyric Edwards chipped in 11 to go with 10 rebounds. Torrence Thomas led the team with 12 boards.

East-West shot 35.4 percent (28-for-79) from the floor and attempted a single free throw, which Edwards made. Goshen countered with 42.6 percent shooting (26-for-61) and an 18-of-24 mark at the foul line.

The Maple Leafs led by as many as 17 points, but that wasn't the case early on as East-West led by double figures as well in the first half. GC finished the half on a 9-4 run and tied the score at 41 early in the second period, pulling ahead for good on a Colin Flowers triple with 11:16 to play. Over the next four minutes, a 9-2 run gradually pushed the lead closer to the double-figure mark in the positive direction.

Goshen sealed the deal with a 13-0 run down the stretch, holding the Phantoms without a bucket from the 3:01 mark until the final half-minute. All told, the second-half scoring advantage was 55-33.

With the victory, Goshen advances to the tournament's championship game and plays Governors State at 4:30 p.m. EDT on Saturday. East-West will meet Holy Family College in the consolation game at 2:30.
