Governors State deals Goshen first loss of season

UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. — Austin Branagan led the Goshen College men's basketball team in scoring for a second consecutive game Saturday night, but the Maple Leafs tasted defeat for the first time this season in a 97-81 loss to Governors State University in the final game of the Jaguar Tip-off Classic.

Chris Pride led all scorers with 21 points for Governors State (2-0), who got 15 points apiece from Tawone Keith, Justin Siorek and Gerald Duckworth. DeAndrey Robinson added 12 points and led all rebounders with 7.

Sheddrick Porter Jr. added 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting for the Maple Leafs (1-1).

Governors State led 56-31 at halftime behind 59.4 percent shooting, going 21 for 37 from the floor through the opening 20 minutes. The Jaguars finished the game with a 57 percent mark overall (39 for 68) and a 58 percent clip (11 for 19) from long range.

Goshen made 22 of 25 tries for 88 percent at the foul line but shot 24-for-64 (38 percent) from the floor. For the second straight game, the Maple Leafs had more than twice as many free-throw attempts as their opponents.

All 13 Maple Leafs who saw action got into the scorebook and 10 of them added rebounds. Tahj Curry, Kedrick Bibby and Phillip Hughes led the team with 5 caroms apiece. Curry added 6 assists and Michael Bowers added a pair of steals.

Governors State had runs of 8 and 11 points in the first half before Goshen shot 15-for-33 (45 percent) over the final 20 minutes. The Maple Leafs finished the game on a 14-5 run.

Branagan and Curry were named to the All-Tournament team at game's end.

Goshen plays each of its next four regular-season games at home, beginning Tuesday night with a visit from the University of Northwestern Ohio. The Racers and Maple Leafs will tip off at approximately 8 p.m. in the first doubleheader of the season following a women's game with Holy Cross at 6.
