Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Ben Cotton sank five 3-pointers and Tahj Curry led the Maple Leafs with 21 points Saturday afternoon as Goshen College dropped a 93-79 decision to Trinity International University in NAIA Division II men's basketball action at Gunden Gymnasium.
Cotton finished the game with 17 points, Michael Bowers scored 13 and Robert Sanders had a career-high 10 on 4-of-8 shooting. Curry led all players with 6 assists and 2 steals in addition to posting 6 rebounds, one short of Colton Noel's team high.
The Trojans (1-1) got a pair of double-doubles: Brandon McQueen scored 20 points with 10 rebounds and Thadeous Johnson dropped 15 points to go with a game-high 17 caroms. Ron Pehka led all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting including a 5-of-8 mark from downtown.
Trinity International hit on 47 percent of its shots and 48 percent of its triples, outshooting Goshen (2-2), which was 39 percent and 33 percent respectively. The Trojans also had a 20-9 edge in foul shots and a 48-38 margin on the glass.
Goshen scored 8 straight points for a 10-4 lead before the first media timeout, but Trinity International would go on a 9-0 run to break the game open, leading 37-29 by the 3:29 mark and 44-34 in the final minute. GC closed within 44-38 by the intermission.
The Maple Leafs got 8 points from Cotton in a 3-minute span early in the second half, finishing a 16-6 run to tie the score at 50 with 16 minutes remaining. Freshman Phillip Hughes, who finished with 5 rebounds, put back a Curry miss to put Goshen in front 60-59 four minutes later.
Bowers and Cotton each scored as Goshen went up by a point on three separate occasions, but each time Trinity answered to tie or retake the lead. Three different Trojans combined for an 11-0 run to go up 75-64 by the 5:41 mark, and nine free throws the rest of the way ensured that the Maple Leafs would not keep up.
The Trojans shot an even 50 oercent (15-for-30) in the second half against Goshen's 38 percent (16-for-42), in addition to a 13-3 margin at the foul line.
The Maple Leafs travel to Rochester Hills, Michigan, on Tuesday to take on Oakland University in an exhibition game. The season opener for the Golden Grizzlies, an NCAA Division I program, tips off at 7 p.m. in the O-Rena.
