Hot Curry not enough in loss at Central State

Tajh Curry scored a career-high 25 points Saturday night, but the Goshen College men's basketball team lost a 94-75 decision to Central State University at Bascom-Lewis Gymnasium.

The Marauders, Goshen's only NCAA Division II opponent of the season, broke open a 40-40 halftime tie by shooting 55 percent (21-for-38) in the second half. Darweshi Hunter scored 25 points to match Curry for the game high and lead five CSU players in double figures.

Quinton Glaspie added 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting while Dreon Lewis added 11 points and Tom Johnson hit double figures in points, rebounds and assists. Theo Howard also scored 10 points.

Goshen (3-6), playing its second game in as many nights, got 16 points from Michael Bowers and 12 from Sheddrick Porter Jr. Phillip Hughes played a career-high 23 minutes off the bench, tying Curry and Bowers for the team lead with 6 rebounds. Curry added 5 assists and Bowers led GC with 2 steals.

Goshen shot 40 percent (25-of-62) from the floor and 39 percent (13-for-33) from long range. Curry led the team with 7-of-15 shooting, dialing long distance 4 times. Bowers added 3 triples; Porter and Ben Cotton added 2 apiece.

Central State (3-2) had six players shoot 50 percent or better, led by a 10-of-15 night from Hunter and a 7-for-9 performance from Glaspie. The Marauders shot 55 percent (39-for-71) and added a 6-of-19 mark (32 percent) from long range. Hunter had four offensive boards to lead all players as the hosts posted a 44-32 advantage on the glass.

The Marauders added 12 steals to cancel out their 12 turnovers.

Goshen's only lead of the first half came in the opening minute and Central State led by as many as 15 at the end of a 7-0 run with 4:14 left in the half. The Maple Leafs finished the half by scoring 12 straight points and 17 of the last 19, with Curry personally recording the last 9 to tie the game with 19 seconds to go.

Glaspie put Central State back in front on the first possession after the intermission, but Goshen answered with a Bowers layup to tie the score 48 seconds later. The teams traded baskets for the first 3:09, with the Maple Leafs taking the lead twice.

Central State quickly decided it had had enough of the close game, however, scoring eight straight points after Porter's triple gave GC a 48-46 lead with 16:51 left. The Maple Leafs would add one more field goal before the middle of the half as CSU made 9 of its next 13 shots.

Bowers and Curry added a pair of triples as GC made three straight shots in a 95-second span later in the half, but the damage had been done.

Goshen returns to the floor Tuesday night to open its Crossroads League slate after two days off. The Maple Leafs make their shortest road trip of the season, traveling the 27 miles to Winona Lake, Indiana, to take on Grace College. Tip time is set for 8 p.m. in the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center after a women's game at 6.
