Maple Leafs let first-half lead slip through cracks at LTU

Box Score

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. — Tahj Curry scored 17 points to lead the Goshen College men's basketball team in its final game before Christmas break, but the Lawrence Technological University offense proved too much to overcome behind 10 second-half 3-pointers and the Maple Leafs lost 76-74 at the Don Ridler Field House.

Michael Bowers added 16 points and Sheddrick Porter Jr. scored 15 while Grant Monix chipped in a career-high 11 off the bench for the Maple Leafs (4-11). Goshen shot 51 percent from the floor and was a perfect 10-for-10 at the foul line .

Lawrence Tech got a game-high 19 points from Jordan Henry, who played 31 minutes off the bench. Carter Frantz and Dewayn Allen each added 13 points and Brandon Beavers tossed in 11. The 3-point barrage was led by Alek Ivanovic, whose three triples accounted for all 9 points.

The Blue Devils went 26-for-64 (41 percent) from the floor, but took more than half their shots from beyond the arc and connected at a 35 percent clip (12-for-34). Lawrence Tech also finished with 12 free throws to Goshen's 10 and outrebounded the Maple Leafs 40-30.

Beavers led all players with 7 assists. Each team's leading rebounder, Allen and Porter, had 7 boards: Curry added 6 for GC, but LTU (7-5) added a quintet of players with 5 rebounds apiece.

The Maple Leafs used a 16-4 first-half run to open a 12-point advantage on Phillip Hughes' layup at the 9:39 mark. Goshen led by as many as 16 in the first half, shooting 13-for-29 (45 percent), but an 8-2 LTU run trimmed things back to 35-29 at the break.

Lawrence Tech, which was 2-for-16 (13 percent) from distance in the first half, made 10 of its 18 triples for a 56 percent clip in the last 20 minutes. Goshen shot 16-for-28 from the floor, a 57 percent mark, but only dialed long distance three times. LTU also blocked 3 shots and forced 6 turnovers.

The Blue Devils used a 7-0 run to get back to a tie game with 14:32 remaining, only to watch Curry score the next 5 points. An 11-0 LTU run fueled by three straight triples put them up 6 less than three minutes later.

Goshen fought back to tie the score at 56 on a Bowers layup with 9:44 remaining and neither team would lead by more than three points from that time forward. There would be 8 lead changes and 7 ties in the final 10 minutes.

Monix sank a triple with 1:38 left to give Goshen a 72-70 lead, but Beavers' layup tied things 11 seconds later. Austin Branagan put Goshen back in front, but 13 seconds after that, Gunnar Gustafson flushed home a dunk to level things at 74.

Out of a timeout, GC got Curry a look at a jumper, which missed with 37 seconds remaining. With more time on the game clock than the shot clock, the Maple Leafs got a stop, but Allen got the offensive rebound and was fouled, sinking two shots with 10.6 seconds left to go up 76-74.

Goshen turned the ball over on the ensuing possession and sent the Blue Devils back to the line; after the front end of the one-and-one missed, so too did the Maple Leafs' last-ditch attempt.

LTU finished with a 22-6 edge in second-chance points.

Goshen is idle for nearly two weeks before returning to the Crossroads League slate on Saturday, Jan. 4, with a game against Mount Vernon Nazarene University. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. in Gunden Gymnasium.
