Box Score HUNTINGTON, Ind. — Austin Branagan led the Goshen College men's basketball team with 15 points and 7 rebounds Tuesday in a 75-66 Crossroads League loss to Huntington University at Platt Arena.
Tahj Curry added 11 points to go with 9 assists and 7 boards, Michael Bowers added 12 points and Landon Newnum chipped in 12 off the bench on 4-of-6 shooting.
Huntington shot 47 percent in the first half, going 14-of-30 from the floor, and led 35-24 at the intermission. After Branagan's triple tied the score at the 12:03 mark, the Foresters went on an 8-0 run; they would lead by as many as 16 points before Goshen tacked on the last 5 points of the half.
Goshen started the second half on a 6-0 run and closed the gap back to single digits on Newnum's personal 4-point run with 11 minutes left. For every Maple Leaf move, Huntington had an answer, with a 9-0 spurt culminating in a 64-47 lead at the 6:13 mark.
The Maple Leafs answered with a 17-4 run of their own, getting 6 points from Curry and 4 from Bowers before Newnum connected to bring the visitors within 68-64 at the 1:41 mark. Huntington held the ball for most of the shot clock before getting an offensive rebound and scoring to go up 6 with 63 seconds left.
At that point, time was solidly against the Maple Leafs, who went 0-for-3 from the floor in the final minute while Huntington went 5-of-8 at the foul line.
Konner Platt, grandson of the arena's namesake Steve, scored a game-high 31 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including a 5-of-8 mark from long range and a 12-of-13 clip at the foul line. Spencer Ballinger added 13 points and 8 rebounds.
Huntington shot 45 percent (25-for-56) overall and 36 percent (9-of-25) from long range. Goshen was 25-of-64 (39 percent) and 9-of-29 (31 percent) respectively. The Maple Leafs hit on half of their 32 shots in the second half.
Goshen returns home Saturday for the first time in nearly a month as the Maple Leafs host Saint Francis in their conference home opener. Tip-off is set for approximately 3 p.m. following a women's game at 1.
