Sharp-shooting Cougars too much for Maple Leaf men

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Austin Branagan scored a game-high 18 points on 6-of-15 shooting Saturday afternoon as Goshen College dropped an 82-65 decision to the University of Saint Francis in Crossroads League men's basketball action at Gunden Gymnasium.

Tahj Curry scored 15 points and Sheddrick Porter Jr. added 11 for the Maple Leafs (3-9, 0-3). Curry led the team with 5 rebounds.

Jalan Mull scored 14 points, including a 4-of-5 mark from long distance, to lead the 15th-ranked Cougars (11-2, 1-2). Hunter Hollowell also dialed long distance four times to score 12 points. The two players accounted for half of USF's 3-point shooting: the Cougars went 16-of-31 (52 percent) from outside the arc and 13-of-29 (45 percent) inside it.

Goshen finished with a 41 percent clip from the floor and 33 percent from long range, getting one 3-pointer from each starter and one from senior Tanner Camp. Curry also led the team with 5 assists while Michael Bowers added 2 steals.

USF took the lead in the opening minute, and though Goshen would trim the margin to one on three occasions, that lead was wire-to-wire. An 8-0 run stretched the margin to 11 points, 28-17, with 7:45 left in the first half. Goshen responded with 6 of the next 8 points, but USF had another 8-point spurt in them to go up 38-24.

The Cougars led by as many as 21 after halftime, sinking 9 of their 15 three-point tries and 52 percent of their shots overall. Goshen was 15-for-33 (45 percent) in the second half and a perfect 7-for-7 at the foul line in the game.

The Maple Leafs are off next week for final exams, but return to the court on Saturday, Dec. 14 for a game with former conference foe Indiana Tech. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. in Gunden Gymnasium.
