Triple-threat Stuckey not enough as Leafs stopped by USF

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Demarkus Stuckey came within a rebound of leading all players in points, rebounds and assists on his Senior Day, but the University of Saint Francis shot its way to victory Saturday afternoon in a 95-74 Crossroads League decision against Goshen College at Gunden Gymnasium.

Stuckey, the reigning NAIA Division II men's basketball player of the week, scored 26 points on 10-of-22 shooting to go along with 6 rebounds and 3 assists for the Maple Leafs (7-21, 1-15).

Saint Francis (14-14, 7-9) countered with two players north of the 20-point mark, getting 24 off the bench from Jalan Mull and 22 from Chandler White on 7 field goals apiece. The Cougars shot 57.4 percent (31-for-54) from the floor and made 27 foul shots in 37 tries for a 73 percent mark.

Jeffrey Reynolds added 13 points and 7 rebounds, including 4 cleanings of the offensive glass, for Saint Francis, while Hunter Hollowell contributed 11 points.

Austin Branagan went a perfect 8-for-8 at the free-throw line on his way to 16 points for Goshen; Ryan Mansbarger finished with 12 points behind 3 triples and Alhassan Barrie scored 11 to go with 5 rebounds and a game-high 2 steals.

The Maple Leafs scored 9 straight points in the first 5 minutes, capping their run with a Stuckey 3-pointer at the 15:10 mark to open a 5-point lead. The Cougars took back the lead just before the midpoint of the half and went on a run from there, enjoying a 17-5 edge in foul shots to counteract Goshen's 12 first-half baskets. Mansbarger trimmed the lead to single digits twice in the closing minutes, but it was 46-36 Saint Francis at halftime.

In one sense, the tables turned in the second stanza as Goshen made 14 free throws to Saint Francis' 8, but the Cougars shot better than 65 percent (19-for-29) from the floor in picking up the road win. USF added 22 rebounds to Goshen's 11 in the second half.

While the Saturday-afternoon setting provided the atmosphere to recognize seniors Stuckey, Barrie, Patryck Ostrowski and Carter Boos, Goshen's final home game actually comes Tuesday against Taylor. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. as the Maple Leafs seek to knock the Trojans out of the Crossroads League tournament.
