Senior-driven comeback edges Taylor in final home game of season

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Alhassan Barrie and Demarkus Stuckey combined for 41 points in their final game at Gunden Gymnasium as the Goshen College men's basketball team overcame an 18-point deficit to knock off Taylor University on Tuesday in Crossroads League action.

Stuckey led all scorers with 22 points and Barrie finished with 19, combining a 6-of-10 night from the floor with a 7-for-8 performance at the foul line and a game-high 2 blocks. Ryan Mansbarger scored 12 points and Tanner Camp led the Maple Leafs (8-21, 2-15) with 8 rebounds.

Taylor (11-18, 5-12) got 21 points from Ryan Robinson and 12 from Vincent Miranda, who led all players by connecting four times from beyond the 3-point arc. While the Trojans' starters included three players in double figures and the 13-rebound performance of Jason Hubbard, Goshen finished with a 35-9 advantage in bench points.

GC opened the scoring with a Mansbarger triple in the first minute and led by as many as 7 points in the early going, only to watch Taylor take a 35-26 lead into the locker room behind 13 Robinson points. The teams combined to shoot 32 percent in the first half and produced 46 rebounds: Camp, Hubbard and Taylor's Evan Crowe each had 8 before the break.

The Trojans scored the first 10 points of the second half and led by as many as 18 just after the 12-minute mark, but Goshen retaliated with 13 points in a row. The Maple Leafs scored 9 points in 39 seconds, culminating in a Brandon Watkins fast-break layup to make it 53-48 with 8:45 remaining.

Another 8-0 spurt got the Maple Leafs back within two points on a Mansbarger score at the 4:08 mark, and Stuckey's 3-pointer from right of the circle put the hosts in front 63-62 with 84 seconds remaining. After a Taylor turnover, Goshen used its fouls to give to bleed 29 seconds off the clock, then used two Stuckey foul shots to push the lead back to two possessions.

Stuckey, Watkins and Mansbarger combined to finish the game at the foul line, going 8-for-8 over the last minute.

The Goshen win foiled Taylor's hopes of sealing a bid to next week's Crossroads League tournament, something the Trojans would have locked up with a win. Grace's victory over Huntington also kept the Lancers alive, making Saturday's Taylor-Grace game a winner-take-all contest for the final spot.

Goshen wraps up the regular season on Saturday with a 3 p.m. visit to Spring Arbor University in Michigan, where the Maple Leafs will seek to spoil the Cougars' hopes for a share of the conference crown. The game follows a women's contest between the same two schools at 1.
