Box Score ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Katie Baer matched her career high with 15 saves Friday afternoon as the Goshen College women's soccer team held Concordia University scoreless for more than an hour before dropping a 2-0 decision at Cardinal Stadium.
Baer posted the third-highest save total in the NAIA this season and made exactly 15 stops for the third time in her career, having previously hit that mark once in each of the past two seasons.
Megan Starkey and Amay Ciszewski scored for the Cardinals (1-1).
Kaitlyn Begley took three shots, hitting the target with each of them, and Beatriz Meneghin added two shots on goal for the Maple Leafs (1-1). While Goshen finished the game with 10 shots to Concordia's 29, they were more efficient by putting 9 of the attempts on frame.
GC's best chances to score came about six minutes on either side of the halftime intermission. In the first half, seniors Begley and Taliah Borom combined for a give-and-go at the top of the penalty area, only to see Cardinal goalkeeper Anna Roman make the save. In the second half, Paige Renshaw's shot was blocked by a defender and the second ball off Thamires Lima's foot was knocked out for a corner.
Just when it seemed the game might be destined for overtime without a score, the Cardinals ramped up the pressure late in the second half. Between the 59th and 70th minutes, Baer made 3 saves and watched one shot sail high and another wide.
Concordia got on the scoreboard through Starkey, who beat a pair of defenders to score with 11:03 remaining. Ciszewski finished off a Samantha Golchuck pass to make it 2-0 with 47.8 seconds left.
Roman added 9 saves for Concordia, which got a game-high 6 shots from Golchuck. The Cardinals also won 8 free kicks to Goshen's 5.
Goshen returns home for its next match, a meeting with Indiana University South Bend at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
