Box Score RIVERVIEW, Mich. — Paige Renshaw and Areanna Holifield each took four shots Saturday afternoon as the Goshen College women's soccer team lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
Renshaw led all players with 3 shots on target and Taliah Borom had the first shot in the 7th minute, but the Wolverines (1-1) put Goshen on top with an own goal after 13 minutes and 34 seconds. The tally came on UMD's first shot of the game in either direction, as the hosts would not test Katie Baer until the 15th minute.
Goshen recorded 3 corner kicks and 5 more shots in the first half, with Kaitlyn Begley coming the closest on an attempt off the crossbar with 17:35 to play. The Wolverines took three shots in a 6-minute span immediately after the goal, but did not shoot again until the 41st minute.
The game entered halftime all square as Madison Day scored in the appropriate goal to tie the game with 4 seconds remaining.
Each team mustered 2 shots in the first 20 minutes after halftime as the game produced action but not results. Baer made 2 saves in the half and her counterpart Jordan Anheuser made 1 before Jenna Rogers put the Wolverines up 2-1 with 13:19 left.
Goshen (1-2) had a pair of attempts to tie the game in the final five minutes: Bella Larsen had a shot blocked and Renshaw's try was saved in the waning seconds.
GC outshot UMD 16-9 and finished with 4 of the match's 5 corner kicks. Baer recorded 6 saves and Anheuser 4. The Wolverines had an 18-11 edge in free kicks.
The Maple Leafs return to action Wednesday evening, when they come home to the John Ingold Athletic Complex to meet a school with a similar Mennonite heritage and purple-and-white color scheme. Bluffton University makes the trip to Goshen from northwestern Ohio as GC plays its only game of the season against an NCAA Division III school. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. in the first game of a doubleheader.
