Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Austin Branagan dropped 19 points off the bench and Michael Bowers led the Goshen College Maple Leafs with 4 assists and 2 steals to go along with 16 points Wednesday night, but 18th-ranked Grace College left Gunden Gymnasium with a 98-86 win in the latest edition of the Crossroads League men's basketball rivalry.
Tahj Curry added 15 points on 7-of-16 shooting and Ben Cotton led the Maple Leafs (4-19, 0-11) with 6 rebounds and 3 three-pointers. Curry also had 5 rebounds and 4 assists.
Grace (15-8, 7-4) got a double-double from Jaret Sons, who combined a game-high 10 rebounds with 12 points as one of five Lancers in double figures. Charlie Warner and Haden Deaton combined to go 16-for-23 from the floor, putting up 24 and 20 points respectively. Myles Johnson scored 15 and Matt Jennings added 13.
The Lancers shot 34-for-55 (62 percent) from the floor, their inside presence making up for a 5-for-16 mark from long range. Grace outrebounded Goshen 39-26 and the visitors shot 32 free throws to the hosts' 19.
The Maple Leafs shot 49 percent (33-for-68) overall and 36 percent (10-for-28) from downtown.
Each team finished with more assists than turnovers by a small margin, 19-17 for Grace and 14-13 for Goshen.
After an early 5-5 tie, Grace scored the next 6 points and 10 of the next 12 to pull ahead. Another 6-0 run followed later in the half before the lead stabilized between 9 and 12 points. It was 43-34 Lancers at the intermission.
After Goshen's seniors, Cotton and Tanner Camp, scored early in the second half to bring the hosts within 49-42, Grace reeled off 7 points in a row to stretch the lead to 14. Cody Holmes went on a personal 4-0 run before Warner gave the Lancers their largest lead to that point, 76-59, with 8:26 left.
Goshen finished the game on a 6-0 run thanks to three-point plays from Kedrick Bibby (of the old-fashioned variety) and Braden Kingery (of the one-shot variety).
Saturday brings the season to the four-fifths mark and the Crossroads League slate to the two-thirds point as Goshen travels to Saint Francis in Fort Wayne. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. in the Hutzell Athletic Center.
