Box Score FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Tahj Curry scored 41 points, the most by a Maple Leaf in almost a decade and the most in a Crossroads League game since 2014, but the Goshen College men's basketball team fell 84-76 to the 21st-ranked University of Saint Francis on Saturday at the Hutzell Athletic Center in Fort Wayne.
Curry made 17 field goals, the most by a Maple Leaf since at least 2003, on 29 shots and went 5-for-9 from long range. He added a pair of free throws on four attempts in addition to 2 assists and 3 steals.
Curry's total was the most by a Goshen player since Errick McCollum scored 42 against the same Saint Francis on Feb. 6, 2010 – a decade ago, down to the same weekend on the calendar, the day before the Super Bowl.
McCollum's career high was 43 points, posted on the same USF court that Curry torched Saturday, in 2009. Goshen's school record is 46 by Moe Miller in 1969.
The last Crossroads League player to reach that rarified air beyond 40 points was Spring Arbor University's Rob Hogans, who dropped 42 against what was then Bethel College on Feb. 1, 2014 – six years ago Saturday. Three other CL players have scored 41 or more points this season, but all of them did it in non-conference play.
Saint Francis (18-6, 7-5) led 41-37 at halftime and outscored Goshen 43-39 in the second half, getting 15 points apiece from Lance Dollison and Tyler Smith. David Ejah added 14 as each of the Cougars' top three scorers came off the bench.
Antwaan Cushingberry and Jeffrey Reynolds scored 13 and 10 points respectively, leaving a quintet of Cougars in double figures. Austin Branagan added 12 for the Maple Leafs (4-20, 0-12).
Ejah led all players with 9 rebounds, one more than Curry's 8, which was the Maple Leafs' team high. Michael Bowers added six and Grant Monix four for GC.
Goshen used a 6-0 run to take a 12-6 lead early in the first half, but the tables quickly turned as USF scored 23 of the next 29 points to go up 29-18 by the 8-minute mark. The lead ballooned to 15, but Goshen held the Cougars scoreless for more than five minutes going into the locker room and scored the last 11 points of the half.
A pair of Curry free throws tied the game and Branagan's 3-pointer gave GC a brief 52-51 lead with 12:09 left in regulation before USF used a nine-point run to wrest the lead back. That margin would stick into the final minutes, reaching 11 at the 1:57 mark and 12 with 53 seconds remaining.
Each team shot better than 50 percent from the floor, with Goshen checking in at 53 percent (32-for-61) and Saint Francis at 52 percent (33-for-64). The Cougars had a 36-26 rebound advantage but also turned the ball over 11 times to Goshen's 8.
Goshen returns home Tuesday to face off with the team it trails in the conference standings, ninth-place Huntington University. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Gunden Gymnasium.
